The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Since October 1, 2018, Virginia has been issuing REAL IDs, with the final implementation deadline set for May 7, 2025, due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adoption Rates in Virginia

As of March 2025, over 4.1 million REAL IDs have been issued in Virginia, making up 59% of all driver’s licenses. At Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO), 89% of travelers have a REAL ID.

Importance of REAL ID

REAL IDs are required for air travel and access to federal installations. If you don’t have a REAL ID, you must provide another approved government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or military ID.

Steps to Travel Without a REAL ID

If you’re traveling without a REAL ID, the TSA may ask you to complete an alternate identity verification process and undergo additional screening. Follow these steps to ensure you make your flight.

  1. Make an Appointment: Schedule a visit to the DMV to get your REAL ID.
  2. Gather Documents: Collect all IDs and identity documents.
  3. Check Your ID: Ensure your ID matches your airline ticket, especially your date of birth.
  4. Check-In Early: Check in online and download your boarding pass.
  5. Arrive Early: Get to the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight.
  6. Present Your ID: Show your boarding pass and ID at the TSA checkpoint.
  7. Be Prepared for Screening: You may undergo additional screening, especially without a REAL ID.
  8. Enjoy Your Trip: Understand the return process may be similar.
  9. Get Your REAL ID: Obtain your REAL ID when you return.
